Carlos Alcaraz Suffers Ankle Injury In Rio Open

Carlos Alcaraz suffers ankle injury in Rio Open

Top seed forced to retire from match

Spanish star's participation in upcoming tournaments in doubt

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz suffered an ankle injury just two points into his Rio Open match against Thiago Monteiro on Wednesday, casting doubt over his participation in upcoming tournaments.

The 19-year-old Spaniard rolled his ankle while chasing a drop shot in the first game of the match. He was treated on court but was unable to continue, handing Monteiro a walkover.

Alcaraz is scheduled to play in the Indian Wells Masters next week and the Miami Open the following week. He is also the defending champion at the Barcelona Open, which starts on April 17.

It is not yet known how serious Alcaraz's injury is, but it is a major blow to the player who has been in superb form this season. He has won three titles in 2023, including the Australian Open, and is the current world number two.
